Understanding the War Between the States is a supplemental history by 16 writers that enables a more complete and truthful study of American history. Consisting of 40 concise chapters, beginning with the Colonial era of North America, moving to the Revolution and the establishment of the US, it proceeds into westward expansion to the Pacific Ocean. But at that point in American history, the Northern cultures and Southern cultures clash in a horrific political sectional contest over how powerful the country's federal government should be.

The consequence is political sectionalism in the Northern states, giving rise to the Republican Party and the election of Abraham Lincoln and Republican governors throughout the Northern states. Secession of seven Southern states takes place, and President Lincoln contrives a pretext for launching a war of subjugation and conquest against the non-Republican Southern States.

After four years of horrific war, even "total war", the Federals prevail. A process of political reconstruction ensues, a process for the federal government to become all-powerful is launched, and the limited government promised by the American Revolution is lost to memory. State rights declines into a faint memory of days long ago, everywhere, North, South, and West.

Our society has produced the most concise, complete, and easily understandable history that has ever been created for the purpose of imparting a truthful understanding of the war between the states.

"I have been reading history since age ten, with a special concentration from 1850 through Reconstruction. This small, easily readable book has more information packed into it than books hundreds of pages longer! Includes adequate references and great "further reading" suggestions. It is essentially the most readable reference book of the hundred plus books I have and/or have read on The War Between the States. It is a "must read" and "must own" for any WBTS enthusiast, North or South. Also, it will help one to understand the current phobia concerning all things Confederate, and the etiology of several other areas of friction in our culture today! A timely source of information for those who dare to read this book."

Understanding the War Between the States Audible Audio Edition Mr Howard Ray White Clyde Wilson Bill Izard Shotwell Publishing LLC Books Reviews

  • I have been reading history since age ten, with a special concentration from 1850 through Reconstruction. • Revisionist history implies that there is an authentic history which is the standard concerning any specific event. This is taught in public schools as truth when in fact it is simply the view of the state to make its case justifying its own actions. Yes, the Southern Democrats rallied around slavery as the central theme for state's rights. They locked themselves into a corner from which they could not extricate themselves. However, while the North did not pin its war on slavery {Illinois would not even allow blacks to vote, hold office and if they did not already live sin the state they could not come to the state), Lincoln was quick to use slavery as a means to develop a propaganda moral ground as the war dragged on. Often it is after an event that one develops the clearest vision.
  • This is a wonderfully concise presentation of "Civil War" issues, which are generally swept under the rug by the agenda-driven modern political correctness priesthood. It is also an economical way to obtain an excellent overview of the WBTS beginning with the background of the American Revolution, through the major political and military combat events during the War, the monstrous injustices of Reconstruction, and how American history and culture are still suffering from reconstruction political crimes and ideology. This is a a desperately needed antidote to a blanket of ignorance that distorts public perception of the War and is responsible for a number or recent outbursts of political folly. The book is easily readable at high school levels and above. You will not find much of the information it contains, however, in many American classrooms. But every Southern patriot and every Northern patriot, and every seeker of truth ought to have this truthful book in the family. This is a very inexpensive way to introduce your family and friends to sorely needed truth and rational thinking. Howard White is a bull dog of a researcher and all about truth. His co-author, Clyde Wilson, is one of the most distinguished and respected authors of Southern history, culture, and personalities of the last 40 years. They bring with them as co-authors, a formidable team of distinguished and rising Southern authors, all dedicated to sorely needed, now revolutionary, truth in history, This book is designed to have a wide public impact. It is a great read, and I am certain it will have a significant impact in bringing a much improved total perspective to the War, its causes, and its continuing consequences.
  • Brought me up to speed with history l either forgot or never knew. If more would read this things might be a little calmer today. If only in thoughts.
  • Understanding the War Between the States is the most comprehensive single book on the American holocaust. It is a tribute to the 16 brilliant historians who packed so much important information into what is actually a small book. I plan to pass copies out to all the educators and open minded people that I know. Generations of Americans have been subjected to so much propaganda in the schools and on TV that this book may be a hard sell to some but the truth must come out or the South will be perpetually blamed for all of this country's ills. The late historian Shelby Foote said that "You can't understand American history without understanding the WBTS." We now have no excuse for not understanding that horrible war.
  • I bought this to try & understand the neo-Confederate & Lost Cause mindset. The Introduction refers to African slaves as “immigrants.”

Sorry, “immigrant” implies agency on the part of the individual. Slaves did not “immigrate” so much as they were violently enslaved.
  • We need to read all historical facts to truly understand the Civil War. The American History my teachers taught had omitted many important facts.
  • If you want the REAL history of the war of northern aggression, this book is a must.
